Year 10 Summer Booster Work 2026

As the academic year draws to a close, we understand that the summer holidays are a much-anticipated time for rest and relaxation. However, for our future Year 11 students, this period also presents a unique and valuable opportunity to gain a significant advantage as they prepare for their crucial GCSE examinations. We are writing to highlight the benefits of engaging with summer booster work during this time.

Why Summer Booster Work Matters for GCSEs

The shift from Year 10 to GCSEs can be tough. Our summer booster work helps students solidify learning, address weaknesses, and build confidence before the new school year.

Between end-of-year school events, holidays, and lack of review, students can lose significant knowledge over the summer. This means they often start Year 11 behind. Our program provides tasks to consolidate and build their expertise, reducing this pressure. There are several benefits-

  • Consolidate Knowledge: Use the summer to reinforce Year 10 topics, building a strong base for Year 11 and preventing the "summer slide."

  • Target Weaknesses: Focus on challenging subjects without school pressure, turning weaknesses into strengths.

  • Build Confidence: Successfully tackling material independently boosts self-belief, setting a positive tone for Year 11.

  • Develop Independent Learning: Foster essential study habits, time management, and self-discipline.

  • Reduce Future Stress: Getting a head start alleviates pressure during the demanding GCSE year, leading to a calmer revision period.

We encourage all future Year 11 students to view summer booster work not as a chore, but as an investment in their future.

Maths

“Summer Catch-Up” booklets, given out in the last week of Maths Lessons.

There is a Higher Tier and a Foundation Tier version, depending on the students' Maths class.  Precise instructions on which parts of the booklet to complete will be given by Maths teachers as they are handed out.  The deadline for these will be 2 weeks into Term 1 next year, but the long summer break is the ideal time to get these done.  This is more than just a regular homework: topics in the booklet are ones that have been taught this year that regularly trip students up in GCSE exams.

French

The most effective way to learn French is little and often. Short, regular sessions are better than infrequent, long ones. Consistent exposure helps vocabulary and phrases stick in your memory.

  • Daily "5 a Day": Complete your daily "5 a day" questions. Mark your answers weekly and carefully review any errors to learn from them. Repetition of questions is deliberate to embed key phrases.

  • Speaking Booklets: Now that you have experienced a French Speaking Exam you will realise the significance of the Speaking Booklets. Please ensure these are completed, if not already, over the Summer to be fully ready for Year 11. All students have a digital copy on Google classroom and a physical copy.

Geography

A booklet has been completed with all Year 10 Geography students to help them revise the work previously covered on the topic of Resources.

The booklet is designed to take no more than three hours in total. This will help us complete the course content in good time next year. To make the homework as accessible as possible, QR codes/internet links have been included on the task sheets, linking students directly to the relevant resources.

All students will receive a paper copy, and an electronic version is also available on Google Classroom should you wish to review further.

This work will be due at the end of the second week back, so please make sure you have left your copy, neatly completed in rs Manning's classroom.

History

Subject: GCSE History – Superpowers 1945-1972  Knowledge Test Preparation

Pupils have now begun work on our third History course topic: Superpowers 1945-1972. To help consolidate their learning, they will complete a 25-question knowledge test on this unit during the second week back after the break. This test will cover all events from 1945-1947 and will be signposted in Google Classroom. Students will be given a revision guide to help them prepare.

For those wishing to complete additional revision, we encourage them to:

  • Create their own revision materials using the checklists provided in the revision guides.

  • Practise using the list of exam questions they’ve been given.
All relevant resources and materials are available on Google Classroom.
