KS3 STEM workshop at RNAS Yeovilton

Twelve enthusiastic year 7 & 8 students were selected to participate in a STEM workshop at RNAS Yeovilton to show off their design, mathematical and scientific skills by competing against 13 other teams from 7 school across the South West.

The task for the day was to design and make a launch strip that would be functional on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier in rough seas. Once the problem had been solved, students had to put their designs into action and make them.

The presentation process involved each team - Firefly and Swordfish - presenting their design, and demonstrating that it would actually work in rough seas,  to all the other schools and a tough judging panel.

We waited in anticipation to hear the final result; to our delight, the year 7 team took the crown for St Dunstan’s. Our students were a credit to St Dunstan’s and I felt very proud to be with them. They all worked incredibly hard throughout the day and showed immense teamwork and determination to complete the task successfully. Well done all!
